Ages Festival is Appropriate For
The annual All Andros Crab Festival, held each year in June, was started in 1997 by the Central Andros Local Government and community. The purpose of the event is to stimulate the local economies through domestic and international tourism. It celebrates the Crab-catching ways of Andros Island, which is referred to as "The Land of Crabs," because of its success with harvesting land crab. During the summer months, land crabs are plentiful because it is the rainy season. The crabs burrow beneath the ground to keep cool in the moist earth.
Crab Fest, as it is known locally, attracts thousands of visitors each year, who come to enjoy festivities based on the heritage and culture surrounding the crabbing industry, the crab culinary experience on the Island featuring dishes like crab and rice, crab soup, crab and dough, plus great Bahamian entertainment. Highlights include Crabs cooked in 101 ways, a Crab Cultural show, the releasing of the crabs, a Crab Culinary Contest, a Crabs of Andros life cycle display, and Rake and Scrape Music.
The venue is Queen's Park in Fresh Creek, Central Andros, which is 2.5 miles from the Andros Town Airport.
- You can travel to Fresh Creek by air on a short 15-minute flight from New Providence; you may also choose the option of traveling by boat from New Providence.
- Since this is a tropical climate, visitors to the Festival site are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen, and drink lots of water; temperatures can be very warm during June.
