Gun Point
Together with Salt Cay in the north, this is one of the two main access points from the ocean into Ragged Island. Cannons were once located here to guard the harbor, but have since been removed by salvagers. The weekly mailboat docks here and it also serves as primary anchorage on the mainland for yachts. Flocks of seagulls make their home here and it is a great spot for birdwatching. Little Ragged Island is nearby to the south; you can see Hog Cay to the southeast and get a glimpse of Pigeon Cay in the distance.
Gun Point has an inland harbour with a 400ft dock to provide protected berthing facilities for the Royal Bahamas Defense Force and access to the island for the mailboat and other marine vessels . It is also home to a new base for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force which aims to help maintain a constant presence in the Great Bahama Bank area, one of the country’s “richest fishing grounds.”
