Nao Santa Maria Monument
This monument at Landfall Park commemorates a Japanese effort to recreate Columbus' original intention to get to Asia.
In October 1991, a replica of Columbus' flagship, the Santa Maria - built by the Nao Santa Maria Foundation of Japan and with Haruo Yamamoto as Captain - made landfall here on its journey from Barcelona, Spain to Kobe, Japan. They came to "pay homage to Columbus and his crew and carried a message of hope for harmony between men and nations, between man and the environment and between the earth and the universe." - Haruki Kadokawa, Executive President, Nao Santa Maria Foundation of Japan
