Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes
The Stella Maris Resort Club was started at the end of 1965 as a land development and serving guesthouse/inn by the first of four subsequent German partner families. Against all the odds of a very little developed area and island, almost completely unknown to the outside world, it evolved into a growing vacation hotel with an emphasis on nature and SCUBA diving. Over time, the business expanded into marine activities (Stella Maris Marina), air transportation (Stella Maris Resort Air Service) and land developing (Stella Maris Estate & Airport). Today, the partners are semi-retired, leaving day-to-day business to succeeding family generations.
Here is an interesting history-info-fact: Stella Maris Estate, a well known, small and low-key land development but continually growing leisure and retirement town, occupies the lands of what was once “Adderley’s Cotton Plantation” … and one member of today’s Stella Maris’ operator generation is happily married to a Long Island Bahamian, whose family roots lead right back to the original plantation owners. And this is how this Bahamian Out Island plantation-to-tourism saga seems to go on …and on …
