The Shipyard

Historic Site or District
Brittany Percentie

In the 1800’s, Dunmore Town became a noted shipyard and sugar refinement center, which gave the islanders an all-important industry. The Shipyard was renowned for shipbuilding, and The Marie J. Thompson, a four-masted schooner, was built here in 1922. She sailed to Key West, New York, and The Carolinas in record time, taking coconuts, sugar cane, and pineapples grown in the area.

Today this site is used as a gathering spot by locals, mainly for community events such as Junkanno Summer Festival, annual North Eleuthera Regatta, fundraiser events, Independence service etc.
